Don’t Focus on Weight Loss
When it comes to weight loss, everyone is always consumed by numbers. “I want to lose 15lbs.” “I want to fit into a size 5 pair of jeans.” Often times, one becomes so obsessed with calorie counting and how much weight they’ve lost this week that they lose sight of the big picture. It’s not about losing 5 or 20 pounds; it’s about creating a healthy lifestyle that you can commit to in the long run. What good will it do to lose 20lbs if you stop your diet or exercise program after you’ve reached your goal weight?
All these numbers can become increasingly stressful; and stress has been shown to suppress weight loss. So, let’s set the numbers aside of a minute. Instead of obsessing over numbers, I’d like to recommend a few other things that one should be focusing on when making a healthy lifestyle transformation.
Focus on making 1 healthy change every day. It can be as simple as choosing a healthier snack or choosing to go for a walk during lunch. Instead of having a bag of chips or candy bar as a work snack, grab a piece of fruit, hard-boiled egg or a handful of nuts.
Focus on doing a little more exercise each day. This doesn’t mean adding an hour to your workout session. It means if you did 10 squats yesterday, try 11 squats today. If you ran on the treadmill for 5 mins the last time, run for 5 mins and 15 secs this time. Small changes lead to big changes!
Focus on moving more. Set an alarm and make sure you get up and stretch of go for a walk around the office. Studies have shown that sitting decreases one’s quality of life; affecting bone and joints, muscles, tendons, and mobility in general.
Focus on eating more vegetables. I know this seems so simple, but vegetables are a great source of carbohydrates and can easily be baked, sautéed or grilled; just like any other food to add flavor and texture. Fill your plates up with veggies instead of high-sugar breads and grains.
Focus on your energy and mood. When you start to exercise and eat well, you’ll soon notice how you don’t need that extra cup of coffee in the afternoon. You’ll be able get better sleep and be more of a energized, positive, happier person.
After a few weeks (maybe even a month) of making positive, healthier choices, you’ll notice that your pants start to feel a little looser and you’re able to run farther or do more reps. Then you can jump on the scale and see you’ve lost a few pounds; without having to stress about it. This is how healthy, natural weight loss should work.
